The Influence of Travel on My Ceramics

Embracing Colors and Stories from My Favorite Places

Some of my favorite pieces have come to life thanks to the inspiration I find in the places I visit. There’s something about stepping into a new landscape, even if it’s somewhere I’ve been before, that opens up fresh perspectives and sparks creativity in my work. Two places that have been especially inspiring for me are Taos, New Mexico, and Seaside, Florida—two vastly different places with their own unique beauty and charm.

Taos, New Mexico: The Colors of Earth and Sky

William's Lake in Taos, New Mexico

Every year, my family and I make a couple of trips to Taos. There’s a soulfulness in the earthy browns and vibrant turquoise blues that paint the landscape and local art scene, and I find myself trying to bring those colors into my work. I love exploring the galleries around town, where the art reflects the landscape itself, and I’m always left with new ideas to bring home.

In a recent piece—a large bowl that I couldn’t wait to glaze—I experimented with blues and browns, hoping to capture the feeling of those New Mexico turquoise stones. Working with those colors felt like capturing a bit of Taos and bringing it into my studio. It is in the kiln as of now so I will update this blog post with an after picture.

Seaside, Florida: Ocean Hues and Artisan Inspiration

Seaside, Florida, is another place that has made its way into my ceramics, though in a softer way. I’m always inspired by the beach’s colors and the way each little shop in town offers something unique. Every visit, I make a stop at Fusion Art Glass, a shop full of new pieces of art and jewelry that I can’t help but admire. I haven’t quite figured out how to incorporate Seaside’s colors into my ceramics yet, but I’m drawn to the deep blues and beachy whites that remind me of the sea. It’s only a matter of time before I experiment with these shades.

Bringing Travel Home: A Studio Burst of Creativity

When I get back from a trip, it’s like I’m carrying a little piece of that place home with me, and I find myself filled with fresh ideas for the studio. Often, I’ll spend more time at the wheel and in front of the kiln, trying to capture the colors, textures, or moods I’ve experienced. I take plenty of photos while I’m away, too, from landscapes to the pieces I see in galleries, which help me stay inspired even after I return home.
