The Heart of Texas: My Best-Selling Trinket Dish

The unexpected story of how I found inspiration in a mold I almost gave away.

There’s always that one piece that takes on a life of its own, and for me, it's been the Texas-Shaped Trinket Dish. These dishes have unexpectedly become a favorite in my shop, and I’m always thrilled to see how much people love them—whether for themselves or as gifts.

The Backstory

A potter working with a plaster mold, focused on removing bubbles from slip.

Interestingly, the Texas Trinket Dish wasn’t part of my original plan. In fact, I almost never made them at all! I had a stack of slip-casting molds I acquired when I bought my baby kiln and second wheel from a woman my dad was selling a house for. Most of the molds I didn’t like, so I sold them on eBay. But for some reason, I held onto the Texas mold, even though I’d never really worked with molds before.

At one point, I even considered selling the mold, but something held me back. I figured I’d give slip-casting a shot, and after doing some research, I decided to experiment with it. Once I started using it, I realized how much I enjoyed working with molds and the potential they had for expanding my inventory. The Texas Trinket Dish was born from that experimentation.

Why It Resonates

I think the Texas-shaped trinket dishes resonate with people for a few reasons. First, there’s something fun and nostalgic about owning a piece that symbolizes home. Texas has a lot of pride attached to it, and I’ve had customers buy the dish as a gift for people living out of state or for friends who just love Texas.

Plus, these little dishes are super functional! They’re perfect for keeping jewelry, keys, or small items safe, and the fact that they’re handcrafted and come in unique glaze combinations gives them a special touch. Right now, I use three different glaze combinations that have worked really well, but I’m excited to experiment with more soon.

What It Means to Me

For me, this piece symbolizes home. I’ve lived in Texas my whole life, so it holds a personal connection to the state. But beyond that, the Texas Trinket Dish has come to represent an important step in my artistic journey. Working with molds was new territory for me, but it’s opened up more opportunities to create. Now, I’ve started using molds more often to help keep up with demand and offer consistent pieces in different glaze styles. It’s funny how something I almost gave away ended up being such a key part of my work.

In the future, I hope to expand this idea by making or acquiring molds of other states—because everyone deserves a little reminder of home, wherever that may be.
