Preparing for the Season Ahead: My Winter Ceramics Goals

Bringing Seasonal Beauty into Functional Ceramics

As winter settles in, I’m setting a few creative goals that bring a seasonal warmth to my ceramics, both for myself and for others. Winter has a way of slowing everything down, and while it brings a kind of quiet beauty, it also stirs up emotions that remind me of past holidays and loved ones I miss. So, in these colder months, I want to keep creating—not only to share that warmth with others but also to stay grounded myself.

Creating Wintery Pieces to Capture the Season’s Spirit

This season, I’m excited to work on a few new ideas that feel very “winter.” I’ll be making sets of ceramic Christmas trees in three sizes, so there’s a small, medium, and large tree to bring a festive but simple decoration to any home. I’ll also be focusing on more mugs and bowls—pieces that are especially cozy and functional as the weather cools down. I’m even planning to add little winter scenes to the mugs, with the hope that they bring comfort to those quiet, chilly mornings with a warm drink in hand.

To bring in this seasonal feel, I’ll be using glazes with a more wintery vibe. One glaze I’m especially excited to use more of is Micro Pearl, which gives pieces a snowy, shimmering finish, like fresh frost. I’ll also be incorporating Sapphire, a deep blue that reflects the darker, longer nights of winter. Together, these glazes capture the quiet beauty and depth of the season, bringing a touch of winter’s magic into each piece.

Shifting into Functional Pieces for Everyday Comfort

I love creating vases, but this season, I feel drawn to more functional pieces like bowls and mugs. With the colder weather, these items feel especially meaningful—used daily, they become a small source of warmth and comfort.

I imagine them finding their way into someone’s routine, holding a warm cup of tea or a bowl of soup on a chilly night. This focus on functional ceramics is a way to create pieces that become part of my customers’ lives, something that brings a touch of joy to the season.

Making Time to Create in the Stillness of Winter

Winter can be a challenging time for me, with its short days and the emotions that the holidays can bring up. I often feel less energized, finding myself wanting to retreat and spend quiet time with family.

One of my goals this winter is to spend at least an hour a day in the studio, even on those days when it feels harder to get moving. Making gives me a sense of calm and focus, and I know that staying committed to my ceramics will help keep me grounded in other areas of life as well.

Inviting Your Ideas into My Creative Process

One thing I always keep in mind as I create is how these pieces will feel to those who bring them into their homes. While I’m making each piece because it’s something I love, I also want to create ceramics that my customers will enjoy, too. I hope to continue bringing in your suggestions this season and crafting pieces that add a little seasonal joy and warmth to your daily life.
