More Than Just Art: Functional Ceramics For Everyday Use

Bringing beauty, purpose, and practicality into your daily routine

When I started my ceramics journey, I quickly realized that I wanted my pieces to be more than just something people could admire from a distance. That’s why I chose to focus on functional ceramics—pieces that people could use every day, like mugs, bowls, and plates. I wanted my work to bring joy and purpose into daily life, allowing people to enjoy the beauty of handmade art while using it in practical ways.

Balancing Form and Function

One of the most important things for me is making sure my pieces are not only beautiful but also functional and practical. I design my ceramics with ease of use in mind, especially when it comes to cleaning. I want my pieces to last for years, and by making them easy to clean, I can help reduce the risk of bacteria growing and ensure that they can be used every day without worry. It’s all about making sure that art can also be durable and dependable.

A Favorite Piece from My Own Routine

One of my favorite pieces that I’ve kept for myself is a bowl I made about six months ago. As the weather has gotten colder, I’ve started using it more, and it’s become a staple in my kitchen.

There’s something about the way it feels and looks that I just couldn’t part with—it has that perfect blend of comfort and beauty that I aim for in all my functional work. Before this, I was using a bowl I made in college, but over time, the glaze began to crack, so now it serves a different purpose, holding non-liquid foods. It’s a reminder of how my pieces evolve with time, both in function and sentiment.

Bringing Purpose to Everyday Life

When I create functional ceramics, I’m thinking about more than just how they’ll be used—I want them to carry a deeper meaning. I’ve had times in my life where I felt lost, like I didn’t have a purpose. With time and help, I grew and found my purpose again, both as a child of God and as an artist. Now, I try to reflect that sense of purpose in my work.

I want my ceramics to remind people that they, too, have a purpose, just like every piece I create has a purpose. Through my work, I hope to share God’s love and show His grace in the craftsmanship and care that goes into each piece.

The Joy of Being Part of Someone’s Routine

When a customer tells me they use one of my pieces every day, it fills me with so much pride and joy. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about knowing that something I made with my hands has become part of someone’s daily routine. It’s a reminder that art doesn’t just belong in galleries or on shelves—it can live in kitchens, on tables, and in everyday moments.

Designing for Use and Safety

When I create functional ceramics, I’m always mindful of the little details that make a big difference. I make sure to use food-safe glazes, and I keep any textured designs away from areas that come into contact with food. This way, the pieces remain easy to clean while still offering that tactile, handmade charm. It’s a balance between beauty and function that I strive for in each new piece.
