Reflecting on the peaceful beauty of winter in my ceramics
As the seasons shift and the leaves begin to fall, I find myself inspired by the natural changes around me. The vibrant greens of summer fade into deep reds, oranges, and eventually softer browns as nature settles into a quieter, more reflective phase.
This transition sparks a similar shift in my studio, where my palette starts to reflect the mood of fall easing into winter. I love watching the colors change outside my window and allowing those hues to guide my choices with each piece I create.
As fall fades into winter, I find myself drawn to deep blues and soft whites—colors that capture the spirit of these seasons. Recently, I’ve been using a glaze called Micro Pearl, and I’m in love with the result. It has this delicate, snowy shimmer, perfect for the winter months ahead. One of my first Micro Pearl pieces, the Snowdrift vase, even found its new home during a recent Sip and Shop event. Seeing how it resonated with someone else was a reminder of why these colors are so close to my heart.
Inspired by Winter’s Sunlight and Snowfall
For me, color is more than a visual choice—it's a way to infuse emotion into my ceramics and connect deeper with the seasons around me. The deep blues I use reflect the brief, serene moments of winter sunrises and sunsets, where light feels precious and fleeting. These colors capture the quiet stillness of winter, evoking both peace and nostalgia.
The whites, meanwhile, remind me of snowfall—soft, comforting, and transformative. Each time I use these hues, I aim to weave in the emotions that winter stirs in me, creating functional ceramics that bring that same sense of calm and beauty to others. It’s a way to reflect on the season’s unique blend of quiet beauty and introspection, inviting others to feel it as I do.
Crafting Cozy Mugs for Cooler Mornings
As the weather cools, I also find myself shifting to make more functional, cozy pieces like mugs and bowls. There’s something so comforting about wrapping your hands around a warm mug, especially as the mornings turn crisp. These pieces become part of small rituals, like a quiet coffee in the early morning or a warm tea before bed—moments I hope to bring into others’ lives, too.
Finding Comfort in Winter’s Beauty and Bittersweet Moments
Winter has always been a season I love, even if it sometimes carries a bit of sadness with its beauty. The snow, the shorter days, and the cold remind me of times past, of being a kid surrounded by loved ones during the holidays. For anyone who also feels the bittersweet side of winter, know that you’re not alone. Taking time to sit in the sun, even briefly, can be a reminder that brighter days are around the corner.
As I create, I hope my ceramics brings comfort to others, just as these colors and shapes bring comfort to me. I can’t wait to share more pieces that capture the spirit of winter with y’all.
