A Handmade Ceramic Family Dinner Set

My Dream Project

For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to create a full handmade ceramic family dinner set for my family, something we could eat off every day that’s truly ours. Imagine every plate, bowl, and cup carefully crafted, each piece a part of our family’s story. My dream is to sit down to a meal with my loved ones and know that every piece of the tableware we’re using was made by my own hands.

In a way, it’s an emotional project too. I’ve rarely kept my own pieces because sharing my ceramics with others brings me so much joy, but I want this set to be special—something I’m proud of, that my family and I can enjoy together. It feels like an expression of my growth and my creative journey.

What’s Holding Me Back

This dream is still just that—a dream—because there’s a lot I feel I need to learn first. Creating multiple pieces that look and feel the same is a skill I’m still working on, and making pieces for others has always been my priority. But there’s another reason, too: I haven’t quite found my own style yet. I want to be able to pour my unique vision into this set when the time is right, to create something unmistakably "me."

Why This Project Excites Me

What excites me the most about this project is that it would be 100% me, unfiltered and uninfluenced. I could explore any shape, color, or texture that I’m drawn to, and the pieces wouldn’t have to meet anyone else’s expectations. I think that’s what makes this project feel so special—it would be about creating something for myself and my family, something deeply personal.

A Journey of Self-Expression

In many ways, this project feels like the next step in my creative growth. As a young adult, I was all about people-pleasing. It took me a while to realize that I was losing myself in the process. Working with ceramics has taught me to value my own voice and my own preferences. Now, I focus on creating pieces that I love first. I’ve learned that when I’m truly connected to my work, others find a connection with it too—and that’s a beautiful thing.

Creating this dinner set would be a way for me to honor that journey and celebrate how far I’ve come. It’s something I hope will inspire others to prioritize their own creative dreams, no matter how long they’ve had them on hold.
